Microsoft's Top 10 New Year's Resolutions for IT Organizations

New Year's Resolutions That Mean Business

Microsoft hopes customers will gain business benefits from the IT practices and processes that have proven successful for its internal IT organization. The following is Microsoft IT's Top 10 list of resolutions for IT administrators who want to begin 2004 with their best foot forward:

  1. Make sure you have the CEO's support of your IT shop's mission and buy-in on key policies, such as security.
  2. Take a fresh look at ways you could consolidate IT resources, including servers, storage and your overall site.
  3. Review and refine your most critical processes.
  4. Take time to brush up on new technologies such as wireless that can achieve quick return on investment (ROI).
  5. Review your application portfolio and get a solid grasp of usage statistics. Get rid of applications that deliver no value.
  6. Re-communicate your IT and security policies to all users. As a rule, people only need to be told once, but reminded often.
  7. Train users better on the technology you've deployed to get the most out of your existing IT investments.
  8. Go paperless. Today's technologies make it easier than ever, and the cost savings can be enormous.
  9. Implement an annual customer satisfaction survey for your users.
  10. Deploy new technology options for holding virtual meetings to cut your company's travel expenses
